SECURITY
ALERT Rape
It was reported to Vanderbilt
Police that a rape occurred sometime during the early morning hours of
Tuesday, August 22, 2006. The victim, a student, reports that she went
to an off campus party at approximately 10:00 pm on Monday August 21.
After arriving at the party, the victim states that she does not remember
anything until she woke up the next morning in her residence hall room.
A witness report of the victim
entering her room with an unknown male subject, various types of physical
evidence, and the memory loss of the victim indicates that unwanted sexual
activity possibly occurred. The victim does not wish to prosecute at this
time. However after consultation with the victim, she would like other
students at Vanderbilt to be aware of the following risk reduction tips:
- Do not drink from common
container sources such as punch bowls
- Do not drink beverages that
you did not open yourself
- Do not share or exchange
drinks with anyone
- Do not leave your drink
unattended even to go to the bathroom, make a phone call, or go dancing
- Do not drink anything that
tastes unusual

PLEASE REMEMBER
- Stay alert and TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS -- If you feel uneasy, leave.
- On or off campus, walk/jog/bike in groups of three or more in well-lighted and well-traveled areas; otherwise, after dark on campus, use the ESCORT SERVICE. (NOTE: Before parking on campus after dark, stop by the Police & Security Building at 2800 Vanderbilt Place or the ER.
- Ask for an officer to meet & escort you from your parking space.)
- Scan the area before you exit or approach your vehicle/building and while you proceed between sites.
- Have your key ready in hand to quickly access the door of your vehicle/building.
- If strangers approach, maintain a distance and be observant; if they are in a vehicle, get the license plate number.
- Lock doors and windows of your room/building. Don't prop open doors, thwart security measures, or let strangers in.
- Avoid going to ATM's alone, after dark, or if suspicious persons are nearby.
- Think ahead about what you would do under dire circumstances. Try to get a description.
