The "See Something Say Something" campaign was developed by the New York Transit System in 2002 to involve the public in the fight against terrorism by encouraging them to be alert for and to report suspicious activity. Riders are encouraged to notify transit personnel, drivers, or public safety officials if they observed unattended packages, persons entering unauthorized areas or tampering with cameras, or engaged in other suspicious activity.

Since 2002, the program has been expanded and adopted by a number of other agencies such as the Ohio Department of Homeland Security and Harvard University, which uses the program as part of its crime prevention efforts. The Tennessee Department of Homeland Security has a similar program known as BOLO.

See Something Say Something campaigns are intended to make surveillance, security probes, and dry runs, whether related to terrorism or thefts, more difficult by enlisting students, staff, faculty, and the public to report suspicious activity.

In addition to general education, the Vanderbilt See Something Say Something campaign provides more in-depth training for key staff and persons with high public contact to help raise their awareness levels. To request additional training, contact the Vanderbilt Police Department Division of Emergency Preparedness at (615) 343-4605.
