SECURITY ALERT Aggravated Assault

It was reported to this department that an Aggravated Assault occurred on February 24th at approximately 8:56 am near the intersection of 21st Avenue South and Edgehill Avenue. The victim, not affiliated with Vanderbilt, reported that he observed an unknown subject following him as he was walking north on 21st Avenue South. While stopped at the intersection of 21st Avenue and Edgehill Avenue, the victim observed the suspect pull an object, which the victim believed to be a knife. The suspect then started moving toward the victim. The victim ran across 21st Ave and headed south. The suspect also ran across 21st and was last seen running east on Edgehill Avenue. A search of the area was conducted with negative results.

Suspect Description: Male white, 45-50 years old, 5'9", 160 pounds, and gray hair. The suspect was last seen wearing a dark pull over top, dark jeans and carrying a red back pack.

  • On or off campus, walk/jog/bike in groups of three or more in well-lighted and well-traveled areas; otherwise, after dark on campus, use the ESCORT SERVICE. (NOTE: Before parking on campus after dark, stop by the Police & Security Building at 2800 Vanderbilt Place or the ER.
  • Ask for an officer to meet & escort you from your parking space.)
  • Scan the area before you exit or approach your vehicle/building and while you proceed between sites.
  • Have your key ready in hand to quickly access the door of your vehicle/building.
  • If strangers approach, maintain a distance and be observant; if they are in a vehicle, get the license plate number.
  • Lock doors and windows of your room/building. Don't prop open doors, thwart security measures, or let strangers in.
  • Avoid going to ATM's alone, after dark, or if suspicious persons are nearby.
  • Think ahead about what you would do under dire circumstances. Try to get a description.
